Geotechnical Project Engineer

About the role

The Geotechnical Project Engineer will provide engineering support for underground mining and new project development at Newmont's Ahafo South mine in Ghana. The role focuses on rock mass characterization, ground support design, monitoring and risk assessment to ensure safe and cost‑effective operations.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct underground geotechnical inspections and rock mass characterisation for headings, stopes and infrastructure.
• Design, review and optimise ground support systems such as rock bolts, cable bolts, shotcrete, mesh and steel sets.
• Oversee installation, maintenance and quality assurance of ground support elements.
• Perform rock mass testing and geotechnical investigations using mapping, core logging, laboratory testing and in‑situ stress measurements.
• Develop and maintain monitoring systems (convergence stations, extensometers, micro‑seismic) to track excavation performance.
• Provide risk assessments and ensure compliance with ground control governance and safety standards.

Required profile

• Entry‑level candidate with at least one month of relevant experience.
• Willingness to work onsite at the Ahafo South mine.
