Regulatory Counsel

About the role

We are seeking a Regulatory Counsel to join our Legal & Compliance team, reporting to the Head of Compliance and Risk. The role will be based in Ghana and will provide strategic and tactical regulatory advice across multiple African markets.

Key responsibilities

• Identify, track and manage regulatory issues across markets including Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon and Benin.
• Advise and shape the global regulatory strategy for the organization.
• Lead regulator engagement and manage new license processes in partnership with the General Manager, local country management, finance, legal and strategic delivery teams.
• Scope new territories and products, assessing legal, regulatory, capital, AML/KYC, credit reporting, consumer protection, data privacy and cross‑border data flow requirements.
• Monitor pending legislation, implement compliance actions, and collaborate closely with the Head of Compliance.
• Oversee in‑house regulatory queries, interpret requirements and advise internal stakeholders.
• Provide guidance on regulatory issues arising from partner and stakeholder relationships.
• Coordinate external regulatory counsel when their services are retained.

Required profile

• LLB degree or an equivalent tertiary qualification.
• 5–10 years post‑qualification experience, preferably in financial services.
• Proven experience operating in an African cross‑border legal and regulatory environment.
• Strong understanding of data privacy, AML/KYC, credit reporting, tax and outsourcing regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to engage directly with regulators and manage licensing processes.
• Track record of interpreting and navigating evolving legislative frameworks.
