Guidance & Counselling Officer – University Position

About the role

The Guidance & Counselling Officer will report to the Dean of Students and lead the university’s counselling department. The role focuses on supporting the academic and personal wellbeing of students and staff through professional counselling, training and programme development.

Key responsibilities

• Provide individual and group counselling services to students and staff to alleviate academic and social stress.
• Organise and deliver workshops and seminars on guidance, counselling and life‑planning skills.
• Develop and implement programmes that address life‑challenges faced by students in the academic environment.
• Train peer educators and peer mediators to extend support services across campus.
• Ensure clients requiring specialised attention are referred to the appropriate authority or expert.
• Design structured lessons and learning modules to help students achieve desired competencies in research and study skills.

Required profile

• Research Master’s degree in a relevant field.
• Minimum of eight (8) years post‑qualification experience, or six (6) years as an Assistant Guidance & Counselling Officer in a tertiary institution.
• Professional body membership and documented industry experience are advantageous.
• Ability to produce a detailed work‑output write‑up for external assessment.
