Data Scientist / Applied Economist Consultant

About the role

The World Bank is seeking an Extended Term Consultant to work at the intersection of applied research and operations, supporting the Africa West and Central region. The role will translate data and analysis into policy decisions, project design, and impact communication.

Key responsibilities

• Produce firm‑level and macro‑financial diagnostics that shape new lending operations and advisory engagements across Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and CEMAC.
• Analyze large firm‑level and trade datasets to deliver both rapid analytics and deeper research projects.
• Draft analytical notes, background papers and evidence‑based narratives for clients, management and donors.
• Support preparation and supervision of lending operations, ensuring technical findings are reflected in project design.
• Monitor financial sector developments and create regular presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Economics, Finance, Public Policy or related field (PhD a plus).
• 3‑5 years of experience with firm‑level or bank‑level micro‑data analysis.
• Strong quantitative and analytical skills, familiarity with statistical tools such as Stata or R.
• Excellent written and oral English; working knowledge of French is desirable.
• Genuine interest in private‑sector development and job creation in Sub‑Saharan Africa.
