Electrical Technician (Contract)

About the role
The Electrical Technician will be responsible for installing, inspecting, maintaining, testing and repairing low and medium voltage electrical equipment and distribution systems at the Obuasi mining operation. The role ensures safe, reliable power supply while maximising equipment availability and complying with engineering standards and mine safety regulations.
Key responsibilities
- Install, terminate, test and maintain LV and MV cables, glands, junction boxes, lighting circuits, socket outlets and small power installations.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair and maintain electric motors, starters, contactors, control panels, switchgear, distribution boards, transformers and protection systems.
- Carry out planned maintenance, testing (insulation resistance, earth continuity, leakage, relay function) and safe isolation following permit‑to‑work and LOTO procedures.
- Diagnose and rectify electrical faults on plant and equipment, addressing root causes of recurring failures.
- Support shutdowns, equipment overhauls and commissioning of new or repaired electrical assets.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, test results, inspection reports, drawings mark‑ups and shift handover documentation.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree/HND in Electrical Engineering or Technician Part III Certificate with at least 3–5 years of practical experience in mining or heavy‑industrial environments.
- Demonstrated experience with low and medium voltage systems, motor control, switchgear, transformers, protection and cabling.
- Relevant certifications such as MINCOM, electrical safety, permit‑to‑work, LOTO, working at heights and first aid are highly desirable.
- Strong problem‑solving, decision‑making and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team.
Required skills
- Advanced proficiency in low and medium voltage electrical systems.
- Competence with electric motors, motor control centres, starters, switchgear, transformers and protection systems.
- Expertise in cabling, terminations, lighting circuits and small power installations.
- Skilled in electrical fault diagnosis, testing, inspection and preventive/breakdown maintenance.
- Knowledge of safe isolation, lock‑out/tag‑out and permit‑to‑work procedures.
