Lead Engineer - AI Agents

About the role

M-KOPA is looking for its first Lead Engineer - AI Agents to head a brand‑new team that designs, ships, and scales production‑grade automations and AI agents across the business. The role will directly impact more than 2,300 employees and help scale financial inclusion tools used by millions of customers in Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a team of three AI Ops Engineers, owning their delivery, development, and day‑to‑day work.
• Prioritise competing requests from multiple internal teams using a clear prioritisation framework.
• Design, build and ship multi‑agent systems and production‑grade automations that improve internal and customer‑facing workflows.
• Develop Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines to ground agents in organisational knowledge.
• Maintain the health of the AI tooling stack as usage scales across 2,500+ employees.
• Stay current on emerging AI tools and technologies, distinguishing hype from useful solutions.
• Help refine AI training and adoption across the wider organisation, including software engineering teams.

Required profile

• Mission‑driven engineering mindset focused on financial inclusion for Africa’s everyday earners.
• Proven ability to lead engineers and deliver complex AI‑focused projects.
• Strong prioritisation skills to manage multiple stakeholder requests.
• Continuous learning attitude toward new AI tools and techniques.

Required skills

• Claude, Claude Code, Anthropic tooling
• LangChain, LangGraph, multi‑agent orchestration frameworks
• MCP, Google ADK (or similar agentic tooling)
• Scripting and workflow automation tools
• AI‑assisted development and rapid prototyping platforms (e.g., Vercel, Railway)
• Identity automation (Entra) and integrations with Notion, HiBob
• Experience building RAG pipelines for internal knowledge retrieval
