Mortuary Technician

About the role

The Mortuary Technician will work in the newly opening Bank Hospital mortuary in Accra, providing essential support for post‑mortem examinations and handling of deceased bodies. The role requires a compassionate approach when interacting with relatives and close coordination with medical and funeral staff.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, store, and release bodies in accordance with safety and hygiene standards.
• Prepare bodies for post‑mortem examinations and assist pathologists during autopsies.
• Remove, replace, and restore organs and tissues as required for research, donation, or forensic purposes.
• Label and handle specimens for histology, photography, or teaching.
• Liaise with funeral parlour representatives and escort relatives with sensitivity.
• Maintain mortuary cleanliness, equipment, and consumable stock levels.
• Ensure compliance with health‑and‑safety regulations and departmental documentation procedures.
• Support high‑risk post‑mortems and specialised techniques such as brain and spinal cord removal.
• Assist in training junior staff and contribute to incident investigations.

Required profile

• Diploma in Anatomical Pathology or an equivalent qualification.
• Relevant experience in mortuary or post‑mortem support preferred.
• Ability to work accurately under strict procedural and legislative requirements.

Required skills

• Specimen handling and labeling.
• Post‑mortem body preparation and organ restoration.
• Photography of gross specimens.
• Stock control of consumables and reagents.
• Use of document control systems for mortuary records.
