Underground Safety Officer

About the role

AngloGold Ashanti is redeveloping its Obuasi underground mine and seeks an experienced Safety Officer to lead occupational health and safety activities in the underground environment. The role provides professional advice, ensures compliance with OHS standards, and supports the safety department across all underground operations.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain the section health and safety management system in line with OSHAS 18001 or ISO 45001 requirements.
• Conduct regular OHS inspections, produce reports and manage corrective timelines.
• Perform risk assessments according to the Obuasi Mine Hazard and Identification Risk Assessment and Control Procedure.
• Report accidents/incidents, draft notifications, and lead investigations.
• Upload investigation recommendations and evidence of completion into the Workforce Management Reporting System (WMRS).
• Facilitate safety training, inductions and retain records.
• Coordinate with contractors for AGAG OHS audits and produce audit reports.
• Support Emergency Management Services by developing mock scenarios and producing debrief reports.

Required profile

• Certificate of Competency – Ghana Minerals Commission.
• Certificate of Health & Safety – NEBSOH IGC / CSP.
• BSc degree in Engineering, Physical Science, HSE or related field.
• Valid Ghanaian driver’s licence with ability to drive underground.
• Minimum 3 years experience in an underground mining environment with supervisory responsibilities.

Required skills

• Knowledge of OSHAS 18001 and ISO 45001 safety management systems.
• Audit and inspection expertise, including external safety audit courses.
• Incident investigation techniques and reporting.
• Risk assessment and control implementation.
• Proficiency with the Workforce Management Reporting System (WMRS).
