Director of Nursing Services

About the role

This role involves providing leadership and direction to nursing and midwifery staff, ensuring high standards of practice and offering technical advice on nursing and midwifery matters. The Director will oversee professional practice management, monitor activities, contribute to research and develop and implement policies within the hospital.

Key responsibilities

• Set and evaluate nursing/midwifery practice standards in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
• Promote and monitor quality‑assurance systems.
• Advise on manpower needs and ensure equitable distribution of personnel.
• Monitor and evaluate performance, providing leadership and mentorship.
• Develop and implement policies, disseminate information and plan recruitment/succession.
• Ensure staff welfare and contribute to research, development and strategy.
• Submit regular reports to the Chief Executive.

Required profile

• Excellent leadership skills with ability to lead multi‑disciplinary teams.
• Broad knowledge of health policies, operating procedures and quality‑assurance issues.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work independently, manage workload under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
• Strong problem‑solving, advocacy and negotiation skills.
• Proficiency in report writing and good computer literacy.
• Self‑discipline, emotional stability, conflict‑management skills and a methodological approach.
• Goal‑oriented and honest disposition.
• Registered Nurse or Midwife with a postgraduate qualification (Master’s degree) and at least three years’ experience as Deputy Chief Nursing Officer or Chief Nursing Officer.
• Evidence of leadership, continuing professional development and training in managerial skills.
