Deputy Director – Infrastructure, IT Directorate

About the role

The Deputy Director, Infrastructure leads the University’s ICT infrastructure strategy, overseeing network, systems, telecoms and electrical units. Reporting to the Director of the Information Technology Directorate, the role ensures reliable, secure and scalable services for the university community.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, design, implement and continuously improve LAN, WAN, wireless, fiber‑optic and routing/switching platforms.
• Oversee network, systems, telecoms and electrical units, ensuring service availability, performance and reliability.
• Lead infrastructure modernization, cybersecurity readiness and operational efficiency initiatives.
• Manage vendor relationships, contracts and external consultants for ICT delivery.
• Develop and enforce standards, policies, disaster‑recovery and business‑continuity procedures.
• Prepare budget plans, resource allocations and financial forecasts for infrastructure projects.
• Supervise and develop staff to maintain high technical competence and service excellence.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering or related discipline.
• 10‑12 years of IT experience with at least six years in progressive management of infrastructure teams.
• Proven experience managing an IT division in a large public or private organization.
• Strong project‑management knowledge and ability to communicate technical concepts clearly.
• Experience handling external vendor relationships and budgeting for large‑scale ICT projects.

• Routing and switching platforms (Cisco, CCNA/CCNP).
• Virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper‑V).
• Database and data‑warehouse administration.
• Data‑centre operations, backup and disaster‑recovery.
• Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and related certifications.
• Microsoft/Azure, Red Hat (RHCSA/RHCE) certifications.
• IT service management frameworks (ITIL, COBIT).
• Project management certifications (PMP, PRINCE2).
• Cybersecurity certifications (CISSP, CISM).
