Programme Director – West Africa Human Rights & Democratisation

About the role

The Programme Director will lead the West Africa Human Rights & Democratisation (WAHRD) programme, overseeing strategic development, coordination and implementation across six West African countries. Based in Accra, the role involves extensive travel to partner organisations and field sites.

Key responsibilities

• Design and execute a regional programme that promotes human rights, good governance and peaceful development.
• Manage partnerships with regional networks such as WANEP, MFWA and FOSDA, as well as national civil‑society and government actors.
• Monitor and evaluate programme impact, ensuring compliance with local and international human‑rights legislation.
• Provide technical support to national partners to prevent conflict escalation and strengthen democratic processes.
• Represent the organisation in regional forums, media engagements and stakeholder meetings.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in democracy building, human‑rights advocacy or related fields.
• Proven ability to work with civil‑society organisations, governments and media outlets.
• Regional experience in West Africa, with familiarity with both Anglophone and Francophone contexts.
• Strong leadership, strategic planning and project‑management skills.

Required skills

• Fluency in English; French language skills are a plus.
• Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
• Capacity to travel frequently across the sub‑region.
