Legal & Compliance Manager – West Africa

About the role

M-KOPA is seeking a Legal & Compliance Manager to lead legal, regulatory and compliance activities across its West Africa markets (Nigeria and Ghana). The role will act as the primary legal resource, ensuring operations meet local laws, contractual obligations and best‑practice standards while supporting the company’s growth and digital inclusion goals.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with local and national laws, shareholder obligations and industry best practices.
• Serve as Data Privacy Officer for West Africa, monitoring adherence to data‑privacy legislation and global privacy policies.
• Manage regulatory licensing and engagement with authorities such as the Bank of Ghana, Central Bank of Nigeria, ORC/GIPC/NCA, and CAC/NCC.
• Conduct legal and regulatory research, assess legislative changes and advise on impact.
• Design and deliver compliance training and capacity‑building programmes for employees.
• Develop, implement and review policies, processes and procedures.
• Partner with Legal, Internal Audit, EHS and Risk Management to evaluate control systems.
• Identify, escalate and remediate compliance risk events, maintaining registers for obligations, training, incidents and risks.
• Support investor compliance initiatives, ESG reporting and ESG management systems.
• Prepare and submit regulatory filings, respond to regulator circulars and draft commercial agreements.

Required profile

• Legal qualification with experience in West African jurisdictions.
• Demonstrated expertise in regulatory licensing and compliance management.
• Strong knowledge of data‑privacy laws applicable in Nigeria and Ghana.
• Proven ability to conduct legal research and translate findings into actionable guidance.
