Mortuary Technician

About the role

The Mortuary Technician will support the newly opening Bank Hospital mortuary in Accra, ensuring safe, clean and efficient handling of bodies and post‑mortem procedures. The role requires a compassionate approach when dealing with relatives and close collaboration with medical and funeral staff.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, store and release bodies while maintaining optimal conditions and documentation.
• Assist pathologists with post‑mortem examinations, including organ removal, replacement and specialised techniques.
• Prepare bodies for autopsy, handle and label specimens for histology, photography or research.
• Liaise with funeral parlour representatives, portering staff and medical departments.
• Maintain mortuary cleanliness, safety standards and equipment functionality.
• Manage consumables, reagents and stock control.
• Support high‑risk post‑mortems and ensure strict health‑and‑safety compliance.
• Assist with tissue donation processes and national blood service coordination.
• Provide compassionate assistance to relatives and follow customer service protocols.
• Participate in training, supervision of junior staff and incident investigations.

Required profile

• Diploma in Anatomical Pathology or an equivalent qualification.
• Membership of a relevant professional body.
• Ability to work sensitively with bereaved families.
• Strong organisational and documentation skills.
