Legal, Regulatory & Compliance Counsel

About the role

M-KOPA is seeking a Legal, Regulatory & Compliance Counsel to support its rapid expansion across West Africa. The role sits at the intersection of legal, regulatory, compliance, risk and business operations, helping teams navigate a complex regulatory environment while enabling confident growth.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as the primary legal and compliance partner for Ghana and Nigeria, monitoring regulatory changes and ensuring operational compliance.
• Support licensing and engagement with regulators such as the Bank of Ghana and the Central Bank of Nigeria, and manage corporate and regulatory filings.
• Act as Data Privacy Officer for West Africa, coordinating with the global privacy team to meet privacy requirements and maintain data governance.
• Develop and deliver compliance training, maintain policy registers, incident logs and risk registers.
• Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements with vendors, partners and technology providers.
• Oversee governance of West Africa entities, ensuring board resolutions, statutory filings and corporate records are up‑to‑date.
• Manage external counsel panel, including instruction, fee oversight and quality control.
• Contribute to investor compliance and ESG reporting, supporting the Environmental and Social Management System.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with an LLB and relevant professional legal qualification.
• Minimum 5 years post‑call legal experience, preferably with exposure to regulatory or compliance functions.
• Proven experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts.
• Demonstrated ability to engage with regulators and navigate regulatory requirements.
• Experience in banking, financial services, fintech or structured finance is an advantage.
• Strong analytical, research and communication skills, with a commercial approach to legal advice.
