About the role
SLR is seeking a Principal Tailings Engineer to join its Africa‑based geotechnical team. The role will lead the design, assessment and delivery of mine waste facilities, supporting clients across the continent in achieving safe and sustainable tailings management.
Key responsibilities
- Manage and mentor multidisciplinary project teams.
- Develop and implement company growth strategies and client acquisition initiatives.
- Lead technical reviews of feasibility studies, designs and investigations for tailings dams, heap‑leach pads and related infrastructure.
- Conduct dam safety evaluations, risk assessments and mine‑waste facility audits.
- Maintain and expand relationships with existing and prospective mining clients.
Required profile
- Bachelor of Engineering in civil engineering; postgraduate studies in geotechnical or water engineering preferred.
- Professional registration (e.g., PrEng) with at least 15 years of relevant experience.
- Proven track record delivering complex mine‑waste projects in a consulting environment.
- Extensive experience in planning, feasibility, design and construction phases of tailings facilities.
- Strong communication skills and a well‑connected network within the mining sector.

- Knowledge of global industry standards and guidelines for tailings management.
