Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

Join the MoMo platform team at MTN Ghana to design and build the next generation of mobile‑money infrastructure serving millions across West Africa. As a Senior Backend Engineer you will create high‑throughput services that process billions of transactions and enable users to pay, save and borrow.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and ship distributed backend services capable of handling 10k+ transactions per second at peak.
• Lead architectural reviews and mentor engineers across the platform group.
• Collaborate with risk, compliance and product teams to design secure payment flows.
• Improve observability, performance and reliability of existing systems.

Required profile

• Minimum 6 years of experience building production‑grade backend systems.
• Proven track record delivering high‑availability payment or financial platforms.
• Strong understanding of relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL.
• Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).

Required skills

• Node.js
• TypeScript
• AWS (or other major cloud provider)
• PostgreSQL
• Microservices architecture
• Kafka or other event‑streaming technologies (nice to have)
• Familiarity with ISO 8583 and mobile‑money rails (nice to have)
