Chief Risk Officer (CRO)

About the role

The Chief Risk Officer (CRO) is a senior member of the Executive Committee, working closely with the CEO, Board and business leaders to drive sustainable growth through disciplined risk management. The role provides independent oversight of the bank’s risk profile while ensuring that risk management supports strategic decisions, innovation and long‑term value creation.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with business units to enable growth within the approved risk appetite.
• Lead the Enterprise Risk Management Framework across all material risk categories.
• Provide independent oversight of Credit, Operational, Market, Liquidity, Financial Crime and Conduct risk.
• Advise the Executive Committee and Board on strategic and emerging risks.
• Build a high‑performance risk culture that promotes accountability, resilience and sound decision‑making.
• Strengthen regulatory relationships and ensure compliance with FirstRand Group and local regulatory standards.
• Develop and lead a high‑performing risk function that delivers insight, challenge and business value.

Required profile

• Extensive executive leadership experience in banking or financial services.
• Strong expertise in enterprise risk management and governance.
• Commercial acumen with the ability to balance growth, innovation and prudent risk‑taking.
• Credibility to influence executive, Board and regulatory stakeholders.
• Collaborative leadership style with a passion for developing people and enabling business success.
