Containerization & Virtualisation Engineer

About the role

Canonical is looking for a Containerization & Virtualisation Engineer to join its remote engineering team. You will work on next‑generation open‑source VMM and container technologies, contributing across the stack from kernel to userspace.

Key responsibilities

• Design and specify new features for container and virtualization platforms, building consensus with upstream communities.
• Conduct security analyses, performance benchmarking and optimisation of VMM, Docker, LXD and related components.
• Write high‑quality code in Go, Rust or C/C++ and debug complex issues across the stack.
• Collaborate with distributed teams, review code, and contribute to open‑source projects such as RustVMM, LXD, MicroK8s and Charmed OpenStack.

Required profile

• Strong academic background in Computer Science or a related STEM field, or a compelling alternative path.
• Demonstrated experience contributing to open‑source virtualization or container projects.
• Professional proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
• Willingness to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks).

Required skills

• Go, Rust, C, C++ (system‑level programming).
• Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) kernel development, namespaces, networking and storage.
• Docker, OCI containers, LXD, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph.
• Performance engineering and security analysis.
