Software Engineering Manager – Cross‑platform C++ (Multipass)

About the role

Canonical is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead the Multipass team, delivering a cross‑platform C++ mini‑cloud solution for developers on macOS, Windows and Linux. The role combines technical leadership with people development in a fully remote, globally distributed environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a remote team of engineers building and maintaining Multipass across macOS, Windows and Linux.
• Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback and hands‑on career development.
• Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management and external stakeholders.
• Advocate and advance modern software development practices.
• Participate in code and architectural reviews.
• Engage with the open‑source community, partners and Canonical teams.
• Travel 4–6 weeks per year for internal and external events.

Required profile

• Solid technical background with experience in modern C++ development.
• Proven track record of leading collaborative engineering teams and solving challenging problems.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Passion for developing and growing people.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, STEM or a related field.

Required skills

• Modern C++ development.
• Cross‑platform development on macOS and/or Windows.
• Knowledge of hypervisor technologies such as Hyper‑V, VirtualBox and KVM.
• Open‑source experience and community involvement.
