Movement Communications Specialist – Africa (Contract)

About the role

The Wikimedia Foundation seeks a Movement Communications Specialist for Africa on a fixed‑term contract (July 2026 – June 2027). You will join the Global Movement Communications team to foster two‑way dialogue, build trust, and connect communities across Sub‑Saharan Africa with the Foundation’s mission.

Key responsibilities

• Support connection, trust and understanding with African Wikimedia communities through ongoing dialogue.
• Collaborate with the team to deploy product and technology features onto relevant Wikis.
• Monitor community channels for news, incidents and requests, capturing the movement’s pulse.
• Map editor communities and movement actors in Africa, focusing on product, tech engagement and users with extended rights.
• Translate insights into clear communications that inform communities about Foundation work.
• Undertake occasional assignments for other organisational priorities as directed.

Required profile

• Excellent written English; additional African language proficiency is a plus.
• Familiarity with Wikimedia community dynamics, policies, cultures and communication channels.
• Strong collaborative attitude and ability to work with diverse volunteers.
• Highly organised, capable of handling logistics, scheduling and meeting deadlines.
• Experience facilitating dialogue in virtual, on‑wiki and in‑person settings.
• Background in multilingual and multicultural environments.
