API Engineer - Digital Payments

About the role

A contract (on-site) API Engineer is needed in Accra, Ghana, for a 6-month assignment with possible extension. The engineer designs, develops, tests and integrates secure REST APIs that support payment and digital banking use cases, working across client and platform teams to define API contracts, fix integration issues and improve developer enablement.

Key responsibilities

• Design REST APIs with clear resource models, request and response structures, error handling and versioning.
• Develop, configure or extend API services and integration components according to agreed architecture and security standards.
• Create and maintain OpenAPI specifications, developer documentation, sample payloads and integration guides.
• Run unit, functional, integration and performance tests, and debug defects using logs, traces and test evidence.
• Support authentication and authorisation, input validation, rate limiting and secure handling of sensitive data.
• Work with client developers, integration specialists and Java engineers to resolve dependencies and speed up onboarding.
• Contribute reusable API assets, testing collections and implementation runbooks.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field (Master's preferred).
• Previous experience in banking, digital payment and card solutions or FinTech.
• Experience in a fast-paced matrix organisation and regional experience.
• Excellent English (French is an advantage); willingness to travel across West and Central Africa may be relevant later.

• Preferred: API management platforms, cloud-native or microservices, webhooks and event-driven patterns.
