Java Developer - Digital Payments

About the role

A Java Developer is needed to build and implement enterprise-grade software components supporting payment, fintech and digital banking solutions. The role covers design, development, testing, integration and production readiness, with a focus on maintainability, security and reliable delivery. It is a 6-month on-site contract in Accra, Ghana, with potential extension, and includes travel across West and Central Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain Java-based backend services and implementation components.
• Translate functional and technical requirements into clean, testable and maintainable code.
• Build and consume REST APIs and integrate with databases, payment services and enterprise platforms.
• Develop unit and integration tests, take part in code reviews and resolve defects.
• Investigate issues using application logs, traces and database queries.
• Support CI/CD, environment deployment, release readiness and production stabilisation.
• Produce technical documentation, runbooks and reusable assets, and support knowledge transfer.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field (Master's preferred).
• Previous experience in banking, digital payment and card solutions or the FinTech industry.
• Experience in a fast-paced matrix organisation; willingness to travel across West and Central Africa may be relevant for later phases.
• Clear written and verbal English; French is an advantage.

Required skills

• Enterprise Java, preferably Spring or Spring Boot.
• REST APIs, relational databases, SQL and application integration.
• Object-oriented design, design patterns, secure coding and SDLC practices.
• Automated testing, Git, Maven or Gradle.
• Preferred: microservices, containers, messaging platforms, cloud, performance testing, observability and production support.
