Database Operations Specialist

About the role

The Specialist, Database Operations will maintain and optimise MTN’s enterprise database environment, covering design, implementation, security and performance across multiple platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Create and maintain databases for development, testing and production usage.
• Plan, implement and monitor backup and recovery strategies on a daily basis.
• Perform maintenance of disk groups, tablespaces and datafiles.
• Manage database user accounts and enforce security policies.
• Optimise database performance, troubleshoot issues and fine‑tune configurations.
• Run daily health checks and participate in upgrades and expansions.
• Forecast storage requirements and monitor available disk space.
• Document projects, share knowledge and support tasks assigned by the line manager.

Required profile

• First degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Information Technology.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in a technology‑focused environment.
• Relevant database certifications (e.g., Oracle OCA/OCP, Microsoft MCDB) and familiarity with ITIL, COBIT5 and Agile practices.
• Ability to work in a multicultural, performance‑driven setting and embody MTN values.

Required skills

• Oracle, MSSQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Cassandra and MongoDB database platforms.
• Advanced SQL scripting.
• Database replication technologies such as Data Guard and GoldenGate.
• Knowledge of NFS and clustered storage solutions.
• UNIX/Linux system administration and shell scripting.
• Capacity planning and storage management.
• Oracle RAC, Grid Infrastructure, OEM.
• Certified implementations of GoldenGate, Data Guard, MySQL 5.7, MongoDB and Cassandra.
