Underground Safety Officer

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Underground Safety Officer to join AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Gold Mine. The role focuses on providing professional OHS advice, support and compliance oversight for all underground mining activities.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain the section health and safety management system in line with OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001 requirements.
• Conduct regular underground OHS inspections, produce reports and follow‑up on corrective actions.
• Manage risk assessments according to the Obuasi Mine Hazard and Identification Risk Assessment and Control Procedure.
• Respond to accident/incident scenes, draft incident notifications and lead investigations.
• Upload investigation recommendations and evidence of completion into the Workforce Management Reporting System (WMRS).
• Facilitate safety‑related training, inductions and maintain records.
• Coordinate with contractors to ensure AGAG OHS audits are completed and audit reports are produced.
• Support Emergency Management Services by developing mock scenarios and producing debrief reports.

Required profile

• Certificate of Competency – Ghana Minerals Commission.
• Certificate of Health & Safety – NEBSOH IGC / CSP.
• BSc degree in Engineering, Physical Science, HSE or a related field.
• Valid Ghanaian driver’s licence with ability to drive underground.
• Minimum 3 years experience in an underground mining environment with supervisory responsibilities.

Required skills

• Knowledge of OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001 safety management systems.
• Experience conducting audits and inspections; completed external safety/lead audit course.
• Incident investigation and root‑cause analysis.
• Risk assessment and control implementation.
• Use of Workforce Management Reporting System (WMRS) for tracking recommendations.
• Familiarity with AGAG OHS audit requirements.
