Director, Tobacco Control, Africa Region

About the role

Vital Strategies is seeking a Director of Tobacco Control for the Africa Region, based in Ghana. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Tobacco Control, the role will lead efforts to advance tobacco control policies and programs across multiple low‑ and middle‑income countries.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for the Tobacco Control Accelerator (TCA) Fund, overseeing a multimillion‑dollar annual budget.
• Manage grant‑making and technical assistance to governments and NGOs in 13 target countries.
• Develop and strengthen partnerships with ministries of health, civil society, and international donors.
• Guide evidence‑based policy development and advocacy to implement best‑practice tobacco control measures.
• Represent Vital Strategies in high‑level meetings, conferences, and stakeholder forums across Africa.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in tobacco control, non‑communicable disease (NCD) prevention, and public‑health policy.
• Demonstrated success working with government relations and policy‑making processes in African contexts.
• Proven ability to lead multi‑country programs and manage large grant portfolios.
• Strong understanding of global tobacco control frameworks and best‑practice implementation.
