Laboratory Manager

About the role

ALS is hiring a Laboratory Manager in Kumasi, Ghana, to oversee the operations of its laboratory so that results are delivered efficiently, accurately and on time. The role covers compliance, operations, team leadership, client retention, reporting, risk and finance oversight, and human resources.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with ALS health, safety and environmental standards, the ALS Quality Management System (ISO 17025) and local legislation; prepare and attend internal and external audits.
• Plan, direct and coordinate laboratory activities with the Operations Manager, and run weekly toolbox talks.
• Manage, mentor and coach the team, and train local supervisors and technical staff.
• Handle sample receipt and dispatch with clients in Ghana, source supplies locally, and oversee procurement.
• Oversee QC programs, incident logging and investigation, and close client complaints quickly.
• Meet clients, arrange debriefs, forecast sales targets and report key business metrics to management.
• Conduct performance appraisals, manage time and attendance, assist with salary reviews and recruit direct reports.
• Manage the laboratory budget, generate monthly finance reports and alert management to emerging risks.

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Chemistry, Science, Geology or Engineering, or in-depth knowledge of chemistry or geology.
• Minimum 5 years of operations management experience with a multinational geochemical testing or mining/exploration company.
• Fluent written and spoken French and English (mandatory).
• Ability to travel.
