Mechanical Technician - Shaft Maintenance

About the role

AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited is redeveloping the Obuasi Gold Mine into a fully mechanised underground operation producing up to 5,000 tonnes of ore per day. It is looking for an experienced Mechanical Technician for shaft maintenance, based in Obuasi, who will carry out statutory inspections of shafts, transporting and slinging of materials and other shaft-related work in line with LI2182, safely and in a compliant, cost-effective way.

Key responsibilities

• Work according to total quality management principles and ensure zero defects, safety and adherence to the site's Environmental Management Plan.
• Carry out statutory inspections of shafts, transporting and slinging of materials and other shaft-related jobs in compliance with LI2182.
• Perform daily pre-start and shift handover checks, complete check sheets and report anomalies to the Shaft Supervisor or in the shaft log book so work requests can be created in SAP.
• Assess equipment needed for tasks (slings, chain blocks, wire ropes), prepare checklists and transport the tools.
• Monitor operating parameters against standards, take corrective action and log equipment performance in the asset health system, escalating signs of potential failure.
• Stop equipment that poses a high risk and report it to the Shaft Supervisor.
• Identify and propose cost reduction initiatives and cost-saving projects, and escalate delays to the Supervisor.
• Gather information for the Senior Winder Driver and help plan condition monitoring routes for infrastructure equipment.

Required profile

• Secondary or technical education.
• Completed mechanical apprenticeship from a recognised scheme (e.g. City and Guilds).
• National Vocational Level 1 certificate of competency issued by the Chief Inspector of Mines under LI2182.
• 5+ years' experience as a mechanical tradesperson in underground mining.
• Experience in a similar position and familiarity with shaft signalling.

Required skills

• Strong mechanical maintenance skills in underground mining.
• Excellent knowledge of LI2182 and AGA standards.
• Sound project management and analytical skills, attention to detail and ability to communicate technical issues orally and in writing.
• Understanding of engineering practice and proactive maintenance strategies.
